Overview

Description

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by excessive anxiety and worry occurring more days than not for at least 6 months, about a variety of events or activities. The worry is difficult to control and is associated with symptoms such as restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbances. The anxiety causes significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

Prevalence

Lifetime prevalence is estimated at 5–6%. More common in females than males, with a typical onset in adolescence or early adulthood.

Age of Onset

Often begins in late adolescence to early adulthood, but can occur at any age. Onset is usually gradual rather than abrupt.
