About AbleTo
AbleTo is a US virtual behavioral health service sold to health plans and employers rather than directly to the public; press reported in 2020 that UnitedHealth Group's Optum was buying it for about $470 million. Its programs run for 8 weeks and use cognitive behavioral therapy, delivered by phone or secure video with a licensed therapist, with a behavioral coach alongside. AbleTo says it is a covered benefit for more than 26 million people and that most participants pay nothing, though copays and deductibles depend on your plan; late rescheduling can incur a $45 fee. The published research is uncontrolled: a 2018 before-after study of 1,482 program graduates found large drops in depression scores, and a 2021 retrospective study of its self-guided AbleTo Digital+ app reported symptom improvement among people who completed at least four modules.
