About 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (formerly the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline) is a US network of local crisis centers funded by SAMHSA and administered by Vibrant Emotional Health. Calling or texting 988, or using the chat at 988lifeline.org, connects you with a trained crisis counselor who listens, helps you get through the moment, can make a safety plan with you, and can connect you to local services. Press 1 reaches the Veterans Crisis Line and press 2 Spanish-language support. The LGBTQ+ youth option (press 3) was defunded in July 2025 and was reported restored on 30 September 2026 after Congress funded it again. You do not need to give your name, and the service is free. Evidence for crisis lines comes from follow-up interviews with callers rather than randomized trials.
