To define Tobacco: Tobacco use disorder is an addiction to nicotine from cigarettes, vapes, or other tobacco products that causes cravings and difficulty quitting despite health problems.

Description

Tobacco use disorder involves a problematic pattern of tobacco (e.g., cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, vaping nicotine) use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress. Withdrawal occurs upon cessation or reduction in use after prolonged daily intake.

Prevalence

About 14% of U.S. adults smoke cigarettes; higher rates among those with psychiatric disorders.

Age of Onset

Typically begins in adolescence.
