Clinical Hypnosis

Reviewed by the HeyPsych Medical Review Board

Board-certified psychiatrists and mental health professionals

Indications

Primary Indications

Pain managementAnxiety reductionPhobia treatmentIBS symptom reliefSmoking cessation

Mechanism

Clinical hypnosis works by inducing a state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility, allowing therapeutic suggestions to influence perception, cognition, and behavior. Neuroimaging studies suggest changes in brain activity in regions associated with attention, perception, and pain modulation. Hypnosis is thought to bypass conscious resistance and activate subconscious processing, facilitating behavioral and emotional change.

Protocol

Preparation

Patient history is reviewed to determine suitability. The therapist explains the process and addresses misconceptions.

Procedure

  1. Induction phase with guided relaxation and focus.
  2. Deepening phase to intensify trance state.
  3. Suggestion phase where therapeutic goals (e.g., pain relief, reduced anxiety, habit change) are introduced.
  4. Termination phase gradually returns patient to alert awareness.

Frequency: Varies by condition; can range from a single session (e.g., pre-surgical anxiety) to 6–12 sessions for chronic issues.

Duration: 30–60 minutes per session.

Total Treatment Time: 1–3 months for most structured programs.
