Social Anxiety Disorder

To define Social Anxiety Disorder: Intense fear of being judged or embarrassed in social situations, leading to avoidance and significant distress.

Overview

Description

Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia) is characterized by a marked, persistent fear or anxiety about one or more social situations where the individual may be scrutinized by others. The person fears acting in a way, or showing anxiety symptoms, that will be negatively evaluated (e.g., humiliation, embarrassment, rejection). These social situations almost always provoke fear/anxiety, are avoided or endured with intense distress, and cause significant functional impairment. Duration is typically ≥6 months.

Prevalence

12-month prevalence in U.S. adults ~7%; rates higher in females; often begins in adolescence.

Age of Onset

Median onset around age 13; may follow a humiliating social experience or emerge gradually.

DSM-5 Code

300.23

ICD-10 Code

F40.10
