To define Bipolar I Disorder: A condition causing episodes of extreme elevated mood and energy alternating with periods of deep depression.

Overview

Description

Bipolar I Disorder is characterized by at least one lifetime manic episode, often with recurrent depressive and hypomanic episodes. Mania involves a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and increased energy/activity, causing marked impairment, need for hospitalization, or psychosis.

Prevalence

Lifetime ~1%; similar across sexes. High rates of underdiagnosis/misdiagnosis early in course.

Age of Onset

Late adolescence to early adulthood; can occur across lifespan.
