Reviewed by the HeyPsych Medical Review Board

Board-certified psychiatrists and mental health professionals

Indications

Mechanism

Ericksonian hypnosis operates through indirect suggestion, metaphor, and the principle of utilization—leveraging the client’s own language, beliefs, and experiences to foster change. By engaging the unconscious mind through permissive communication, stories, and symbolic associations, it reduces resistance and facilitates cognitive, emotional, and behavioral shifts.

Procedure

  1. Use of conversational or formal induction techniques (relaxation, guided focus, storytelling).
  2. Application of indirect suggestions, metaphors, or therapeutic stories tailored to the client.
  3. Integration of hypnotic experiences with conscious problem-solving and therapy goals.
