Proponents suggest that dolphin interaction may promote relaxation, enhance motivation, and stimulate communication and learning. Claims include the therapeutic effects of dolphin echolocation and the novelty of the experience. However, these mechanisms are largely speculative and unsupported by strong scientific evidence.

Participants typically wear swim gear, may undergo safety orientation, and are introduced gradually to dolphin interaction.

  3. Play-based or structured activities with therapist/trainer present

Clinical Notes

  • Highly controversial due to ethical concerns about dolphin captivity.
  • Evidence for clinical benefit is weak and largely anecdotal.
  • Should not replace evidence-based therapies, especially for autism or psychiatric conditions.
  • Important to screen for unrealistic expectations from families or patients.
