1-2-3 Magic Parenting Program

Reviewed by the HeyPsych Medical Review Board

Board-certified psychiatrists and mental health professionals

Indications

Primary Indications

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity DisorderOppositional Defiant Disorder

Mechanism

The program works by training parents to reduce emotional reactivity and instead use consistent, calm consequences. It focuses on three pillars: (1) controlling undesirable behavior through counting and time-outs, (2) encouraging positive behaviors through praise and rewards, and (3) strengthening the parent-child relationship.

Protocol

Preparation

Parents receive an introduction to the program, typically through a therapist, workshop, or instructional materials.

Procedure

  1. Parents learn to use the 'counting method' (1-2-3) to address misbehavior without anger or argument.
  2. Misbehavior is addressed with clear consequences, such as brief time-outs.
  3. Positive behaviors are reinforced with praise, incentives, and structured routines.

Frequency: Weekly sessions in structured programs, or ongoing implementation at home.

Duration: Programs typically run for 6–12 weeks with continued home practice.

Total Treatment Time: Varies depending on child’s behavior and parental consistency.

Equipment

  • Instructional books
  • Workbooks
  • Parent guides
  • Video resources

Requires parental consistency; less effective in severe psychiatric or cognitive disorders without additional interventions.

Cost Considerations

typical session cost: $50–$200 (for workshops or therapy sessions)

total treatment cost: Books ($15–$30) or structured programs ($300–$1,000)
