PTSD Coach

PTSD Coach is a free mobile app created by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Center for PTSD and the Department of Defense. It provides information about PTSD, self-screening tools, symptom tracking, and evidence-based coping tools (relaxation, grounding, positive self-talk, safety planning, support contacts) to help manage trauma-related stress. Available on iOS and Android (and online).

In Plain Terms

PTSD Coach helps you understand PTSD, track how you feel, and access coping tools and support resources wherever you are. It’s designed to help with trauma-related symptoms, flashbacks, anxiety, sleep problems and distress. It can be used on its own for support or alongside therapy — but it’s *not* a replacement for professional treatment if you’re in crisis.

How Well Does It Work?

≈ 32%
PTSD Symptom Reduction (real-world users)
vs. Users with repeated assessments over 12 months

In Plain Terms

Many people find that using PTSD Coach regularly — especially when they’re in a safe space — helps them cope with triggers, manage stress, and reduce PTSD symptoms. Results vary; the app is best used as a complement to therapy or other care.

In a real-world naturalistic study of users who completed multiple assessments, about one-third experienced a clinically significant symptom improvement over time. A pilot RCT found the app acceptable and helpful. While not a substitute for therapy, PTSD Coach shows promise as a self-management companion for people affected by trauma. {CITATION_START}cite{CITATION_DELIMITER}turn0search4{CITATION_DELIMITER}turn0search14{CITATION_END}

Who Should Use This?

Best For:

PTSD Coach is best for people who:

  • Have experienced trauma and have PTSD or trauma-related symptoms
  • Want on-the-go coping tools (grounding, breathing, relaxation) available at any time
  • Prefer self-guided support or need something between therapy sessions
  • Are willing to track symptoms and engage actively with the app
  • Need a free, no-cost, no-login option for trauma self-help

Not Recommended For:

  • Those in crisis (suicidal thoughts, active self-harm, psychosis) — they need professional help immediately
  • People expecting the app alone to treat severe PTSD — it works best as part of a broader care plan
  • Users who dislike self-assessment or frequent reminders of trauma — some may find symptom tracking triggering
  • Those needing HIPAA-grade data security or full medical-record compliance
