Insight Timer

Insight Timer is a meditation and mindfulness app with one of the largest free libraries in the world. It offers 250,000+ guided meditations, music tracks, talks, and courses from thousands of teachers, plus a simple timer for silent practice. The app emphasizes community, teacher choice, and flexibility rather than a single structured curriculum.

In Plain Terms

Insight Timer is a free meditation app with a huge library of guided meditations and a simple timer. You can choose from thousands of teachers, join live events, and follow courses on stress, sleep, and self-compassion. It’s great if you want variety and free access to high-quality content. It’s less structured than apps like Headspace, and it is not a replacement for therapy or medication if you have severe anxiety, depression, or trauma-related symptoms.

How Well Does It Work?

Meaningful improvement
Anxiety & Well-Being (30-day RCT)
vs. Greater improvement vs. control group

In Plain Terms

In plain terms: people who used Insight Timer every day for about a month tended to feel less anxious and more well overall than people who didn’t use the app.

In a randomized controlled trial during the COVID-19 pandemic, adults were assigned either to use Insight Timer 10 minutes a day for 30 days or to a control group. Anxiety scores (GAD-7) decreased in the Insight Timer group but not in the control group. Well-being scores (WHO-5) improved in both groups, but the improvement was larger for people using the app.

Who Should Use This?

Best For:

Insight Timer is best for people who:

  • Want a free or very low-cost way to access high-quality guided meditations
  • Prefer choosing from different teachers, styles, and lengths instead of following one fixed program
  • Already have some experience with meditation and want more variety or depth
  • Like community features (groups, live events, progress tracking)
  • Want a flexible timer for silent practice or yoga
  • Need sleep sounds, music, or gentle guidance at night

Not Recommended For:

  • People who strongly prefer a simple, linear curriculum with one teacher (Headspace may be a better fit)
  • Those easily overwhelmed by choice (the large library can feel intimidating at first)
  • People with severe depression, PTSD, or active suicidal thoughts (they need professional care first; this app can be a supplement later)
  • Anyone expecting the app alone to replace therapy, medication, or trauma-focused treatment

Key Features Explained

250,000+ Guided Meditations

Short and long guided meditations from thousands of teachers covering stress, anxiety, sleep, self-compassion, relationships, spirituality, and more. You can filter by topic, duration, language, and popularity.

Evidence: Guided mindfulness practice is the core of most meditation research. Insight Timer delivers this in many styles, with at least one randomized trial using this specific app.

Meditation Timer

A simple, highly customizable meditation timer with optional bells, interval sounds, ambient noise, and background music. Ideal for experienced meditators or those who prefer less talking.

Evidence: Silent meditation practice is widely used in mindfulness-based interventions, though specific timer features have not been formally studied.

Courses & Learning Paths

Multi-day courses taught by clinicians, teachers, and authors on topics like managing anxiety, improving sleep, dealing with grief, or building self-compassion.

Evidence: Course content quality varies by teacher. Many courses are based on well-established mindfulness and CBT principles.

Sleep Music & Soundscapes

Music, nature sounds, white noise, and gentle spoken tracks to help you wind down at night. Can be looped or set with a timer.

Evidence: Calming audio (nature sounds, white noise) can help some people fall asleep faster and mask environmental noise.

Community, Groups & Live Events

The app includes groups organized around interests (e.g., anxiety support, yoga, specific teachers) and live sessions with teachers. You can see how many people meditated with you today and follow friends or teachers.

Evidence: Feeling part of a community and having social support can make it easier to build and stick with a meditation habit.

Journaling & Progress Tracking

Basic stats (total minutes, streaks, days meditated) and optional notes after sessions. Helps some people stay motivated and see patterns over time.

Evidence: Self-monitoring and habit tracking are common behavior-change techniques that support long-term adherence.

Cost & Subscription

Insight Timer’s core meditation library is free, with an optional paid membership for additional features.

  1. 1Download Insight Timer from the App Store or Google Play, or visit insighttimer.com.
  2. 2Create a free account with your email or sign in with Apple/Google.
  3. 3Explore the home screen or search for topics like “anxiety”, “sleep”, or “self-compassion”.
  4. 4Try a few short meditations (5–10 minutes) from different teachers to see whose style you like.
  5. 5If you prefer silence, set up a simple timer with bells and background sounds.
  6. 6Consider following 1–3 teachers you like and bookmarking a small set of go-to practices.
  7. 7If you find it helpful and want offline access or structured courses, consider upgrading to Insight Timer Plus.

Pro Tips

  • • Start small: 5–10 minutes once a day is enough to begin seeing benefits over time.
  • • Using the same time each day (e.g., morning or before bed) can help build a habit.
  • • Create a short “favorites” list so you don’t get overwhelmed by the huge library.
  • • Use groups or live events if community support helps you stay motivated.
  • • If a meditation feels triggering or uncomfortable, it’s okay to stop and try a different style.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • • Spending too much time scrolling instead of actually meditating—limit your browsing time.
  • • Thinking you’re “bad at meditation” because your mind wanders (mind-wandering is normal).
  • • Relying on the app alone instead of reaching out for help when symptoms are severe.
  • • Expecting dramatic changes in a few days—benefits usually build over weeks of regular practice.

Similar Apps to Consider

Headspace

View

Better for structured, beginner-friendly meditation programs with a clear curriculum. Smaller library than Insight Timer but more guided structure.

Calm

View

Stronger focus on sleep stories and polished production. Better if your main goal is sleep. Insight Timer is better if you want free access and teacher variety.

Related Mental Health Conditions

Generalized Anxiety Disorder
supportive
moderate

In a randomized trial, adults using Insight Timer daily for 30 days had lower GAD-7 anxiety scores than controls. Best used as a supportive tool for mild to moderate anxiety, alongside therapy or medication for more severe cases.

Major Depressive Disorder
supportive
low

Mindfulness meditation can modestly improve mood and well-being in people with depressive symptoms. Insight Timer can support mood management but is not a stand-alone treatment for major depression.

Insomnia Disorder
adjunctive
low

Relaxation and mindfulness practices before bed can help some people fall asleep more easily. Insight Timer includes sleep meditations, music, and soundscapes that may support sleep hygiene but do not replace CBT-I or medical treatment for chronic insomnia.

Adjustment Disorder
supportive
low

Short daily meditation may help people coping with situational stress (e.g., life changes, pandemic-related stress) feel calmer and more resilient.
