Description
Stereotypic Movement Disorder (SMD) is characterized by repetitive, seemingly driven, nonfunctional motor behavior (e.g., hand flapping, body rocking, head banging, self-biting) that interferes with social, academic, or other activities and may result in self-injury. Onset is in the early developmental period. Behaviors are not better explained by another neurodevelopmental or mental disorder and are distinguished from tics by more rhythmic, prolonged patterns and earlier onset.
