Description

A preoccupation with one or more perceived defects or flaws in physical appearance that are not observable or appear slight to others. Individuals perform repetitive behaviors or mental acts in response to these concerns, causing significant distress or impairment.

Approximately 2% in the general population; higher rates in dermatology, cosmetic surgery, and orthodontic settings.

Age of Onset

Typically emerges in adolescence, coinciding with increased self-consciousness about appearance.
