Indications

Mechanism

Chromium enhances insulin receptor activity and facilitates glucose uptake in cells. It may also influence serotonin and norepinephrine regulation, contributing to its possible antidepressant effects in atypical depression.

Dosing

Adult Dosing

note: Most psychiatric studies use 400–600 mcg/day.

typical: 200–600 mcg/day of chromium picolinate in divided doses

Dosage Forms

  • Capsules
  • Tablets
  • Multivitamins

Onset Duration

Onset: Weeks (for metabolic and mood effects). Duration: Requires continued supplementation.

Adverse Effects

Common Side Effects

• Mild gastrointestinal upset
• Headache
• Dizziness

⚠️ Serious Side Effects

  • Liver dysfunction (rare, high doses)
  • Kidney impairment (rare, high doses)

Warnings

Critical Safety Information

  • →High doses may cause organ toxicity.
  • →Not recommended for patients with significant renal or hepatic disease.
  • →Long-term safety at high doses remains uncertain.

Interactions

With: Antidiabetic medications (insulin, metformin)

Risk: Hypoglycemia

Action: Monitor glucose closely

With: Corticosteroids

Risk: Altered glucose metabolism

Action: Monitor blood sugar

Monitoring

  • Blood glucose control
  • Liver and kidney function with prolonged or high-dose use

Unknown safety; avoid high-dose supplementation

👧Children & Adolescents (Under 18)

Not established; use only under medical advice

👴Older Adults (65+)

Generally safe at recommended doses

Tapering

No taper required; safe to discontinue abruptly.

Clinical Notes

  • Best evidence is for atypical depression with carbohydrate craving.
  • May reduce carbohydrate craving and improve mood in select patients.
  • Evidence for weight loss and PCOS management remains preliminary.
