Chiropractic Care

Reviewed by the HeyPsych Medical Review Board

Board-certified psychiatrists and mental health professionals

Indications

Primary Indications

Acute and chronic low back painNeck painHeadache prevention and reliefMusculoskeletal dysfunction

Mechanism

Chiropractic adjustments aim to restore joint mobility by manually applying controlled force into joints that have become restricted in movement. This is believed to reduce pain, improve function, and support nervous system communication. While biomechanical and neurophysiological effects have been documented, claims about systemic health benefits remain controversial and not well supported by evidence.

Protocol

Preparation

Initial assessment including medical history, physical exam, and possibly imaging (X-ray, MRI) to rule out contraindications.

Procedure

  1. Patient positioned on chiropractic table.
  2. Practitioner applies specific manual thrusts or mobilizations to targeted joints.
  3. Adjunct therapies such as stretching, massage, or therapeutic ultrasound may be included.
  4. Guidance on posture, ergonomics, or exercises may be provided.

Frequency: Varies by condition—acute pain may require 1–2 sessions per week initially, tapering to maintenance or as-needed visits.

Duration: 15–45 minutes per session.

Total Treatment Time: Several weeks to months, depending on response and goals.
