Indications

Mechanism

California poppy contains isoquinoline alkaloids (e.g., californidine, eschscholtzine) believed to act on GABA-A receptors, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission. This produces mild sedative, anxiolytic, and analgesic effects, though weaker than prescription medications such as benzodiazepines or opioids.

Dosing

Adult Dosing

note: Often combined with valerian or passionflower for enhanced sleep effects.

typical: 300–600 mg of standardized extract, or 1–2 g dried aerial parts in tea, taken before bedtime

Onset Duration

Onset: within 30–60 minutes. Duration: 4–6 hours of mild sedative effect.

⚠️ Serious Side Effects

  • Excessive sedation when combined with CNS depressants

Warnings

Critical Safety Information

  • →Should not be combined with alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines due to risk of excessive sedation.
  • →Not suitable for use during pregnancy or lactation.

Tapering

Not required; California poppy does not cause dependence or withdrawal.

Clinical Notes

  • Traditionally used as a gentle sedative and pain reliever.
  • Less potent than valerian but better tolerated in some patients.
  • Can be used synergistically with other calming herbs for improved sleep outcomes.
