Published August 17, 2025•Updated February 20, 2026•Reviewed February 20, 2026

Indications

Primary Indications

Atopic dermatitis and eczema managementPMS-related breast tenderness, irritability, and bloatingRheumatoid arthritis symptom reliefGeneral skin and hair health

Mechanism

Borage oil contains high levels of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is converted into dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA). This leads to the production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins and reduced synthesis of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids. These effects improve skin barrier function, reduce inflammation, and support hormonal balance. Preliminary research suggests GLA may also influence neuronal signaling and stress response.

Dosing

Adult Dosing

note: Divided doses with food recommended for best absorption.

typical: 500–2000 mg daily (providing 100–400 mg GLA)
