Bifidobacterium breve

Reviewed by the HeyPsych Medical Review Board

Board-certified psychiatrists and mental health professionals

Published August 17, 2025•Updated February 20, 2026•Reviewed February 20, 2026

Indications

Primary Indications

Digestive health support (IBS, constipation)Allergic conditions (atopic dermatitis, rhinitis)Adjunctive immune modulationMetabolic syndrome and obesity (investigational)Psychiatric and cognitive support (emerging research)

Mechanism

Bifidobacterium breve contributes to gut health by fermenting dietary fibers into short-chain fatty acids (e.g., acetate, butyrate) that support intestinal barrier integrity and immune regulation. It modulates gut microbiota composition, reduces inflammation, and may influence the gut-brain axis through microbial metabolites and vagal signaling.

Dosing

Adult Dosing

note: Often combined with other probiotic strains in multi-strain formulations.

typical: 1–10 billion CFU daily, strain-specific

Dosage Forms

  • Capsules (measured in CFU)
  • Powders
  • Infant drops
  • Functional foods (yogurt, fermented milk drinks)

Onset Duration

GI benefits may be noticeable within days to weeks; immune modulation and psychiatric/metabolic effects may require longer-term supplementation (≥8–12 weeks).

Adverse Effects

Common Side Effects

• Mild bloating
• Gas
• Abdominal discomfort (transient)

⚠️ Serious Side Effects

  • Rare bacteremia in severely immunocompromised individuals

Warnings

Critical Safety Information

  • →Use caution in immunocompromised individuals.
  • →Strain-specific efficacy: clinical benefits depend on the exact strain used.
  • →Not a substitute for standard medical therapy.

Interactions

With: Antibiotics

Risk: Reduced probiotic viability

Action: Separate dosing by several hours

With: Immunosuppressants

Risk: Theoretical increased infection risk

Action: Use with caution

Monitoring

  • GI symptom changes
  • Allergic response in pediatric patients
  • Signs of systemic infection in high-risk populations

Special Populations

👶Pregnancy

Generally considered safe; often included in perinatal probiotic blends

🤱Breastfeeding

Safe; may support infant microbiome development

👧Children & Adolescents (Under 18)

Extensively studied in infants and children; commonly used

👴Older Adults (65+)

Safe; studied for cognition and gut health

Tapering

Not required; benefits may diminish after discontinuation as strains do not permanently colonize.

Clinical Notes

  • B. breve is one of the dominant species in the infant gut and supports early immune development.
  • Certain strains (e.g., B. breve M-16V, B-3, Yakult strains) have been studied for specific clinical applications.
  • Efficacy is highly strain-dependent; generalization across all B. breve supplements is not appropriate.
