Reviewed by the HeyPsych Medical Review Board

Board-certified psychiatrists and mental health professionals

Indications

Primary Indications

Stress, anxiety, and insomnia (ashwagandha, brahmi)Osteoarthritis and inflammation (turmeric, guggul)Digestive regulation (triphalā)Immune and respiratory health (tulsi)

Mechanism

Ayurvedic herbs are believed to restore balance among doshas. Biomedically, many contain phytochemicals with anti-inflammatory, adaptogenic, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant properties. Ashwagandha (withanolides) modulates stress hormones; turmeric (curcuminoids) reduces inflammatory signaling; triphalā supports gut motility and microbiome; tulsi acts as an adaptogen and immune enhancer.

Protocol

Preparation

Assessment of constitution and imbalance; review of medications; selection of appropriate herbs or formulas.

Procedure

  1. Herbs prescribed as powders, decoctions, capsules, oils, or topical forms.
  2. Doses individualized; standardized extracts sometimes used in integrative settings.
  3. Adjunctive diet/lifestyle recommendations common.

Frequency: Daily dosing, typically 1–3 times per day depending on preparation.

Duration: 4–12 weeks for initial trial; continued if effective and well tolerated.

Total Treatment Time: Chronic use possible with monitoring for safety.

Clinical Notes

  • Evidence strongest for turmeric (osteoarthritis, inflammation) and ashwagandha (stress, sleep).
  • Quality control is the biggest safety issue; recommend standardized, tested products.
  • Introduce one herb at a time when possible to assess effect and tolerance.
  • Monitor safety labs for chronic use of hepatically active herbs.
