Art Therapy

Reviewed by the HeyPsych Medical Review Board

Board-certified psychiatrists and mental health professionals

Indications

Primary Indications

Depression and anxiety (adults and youth)Trauma processing and stabilizationMedical coping (oncology, chronic illness, palliative care)Grief, adjustment, and stress managementSkill-building for attention, regulation, and communication (pediatrics)

Mechanism

Art-making externalizes internal experiences into tangible form, facilitating symbolic processing, exposure/titration, and reappraisal. Multisensory engagement can modulate arousal and support emotion regulation (bottom-up calming), while therapist-guided meaning-making provides top-down integration. Group formats add social connection and corrective experiences.

Protocol

Preparation

Intake assessment, goal setting, safety planning (especially for trauma), and material selection based on needs and sensory preferences.

Procedure

  1. Warm-up/regulation exercise (e.g., grounding, breath, sensory choice).
  2. Art task aligned with goals (e.g., emotion mapping, safe place collage, narrative sequence drawing, mask-making for identity work).
  3. Processing: reflection, CBT/DBT skills linkage, trauma-informed titration and meaning-making.
  4. Close with stabilization and aftercare instructions.

Frequency: Weekly typical; increased frequency during intensive phases.

Duration: 45–60 minutes per session.

Total Treatment Time: 6–24+ sessions depending on diagnosis and goals.

Clinical Notes

  • Therapeutic alliance and phased treatment (stabilize, process, integrate) drive outcomes.
