Alpha-Theta Neurofeedback

Reviewed by the HeyPsych Medical Review Board

Board-certified psychiatrists and mental health professionals

Indications

Primary Indications

Substance use disorders and addiction recoveryPost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)Complex trauma and developmental traumaTreatment-resistant depression and anxietyChronic stress and burnoutSleep disorders and insomniaCreative enhancement and peak performance

Mechanism

Alpha-theta neurofeedback trains the brain to access deep states of relaxation by increasing alpha (8-12 Hz) and theta (4-8 Hz) brainwave production. These frequencies are associated with meditative states, enhanced creativity, and access to unconscious material. The training facilitates neuroplasticity and helps establish new neural pathways associated with calm, balanced states.

Protocol

Preparation

Patient sits comfortably in a quiet environment with EEG sensors placed on the scalp (typically Pz, O1, O2 locations)

Procedure

  1. Baseline EEG recording (5-10 minutes)
  2. Eyes-closed alpha-theta training (20-40 minutes)
  3. Real-time audio feedback when alpha/theta ratios meet criteria
  4. Patient remains passive and relaxed during training
  5. Session ends with brief integration period

Frequency: 2-3 sessions per week

Duration: 20-40 sessions typically required for lasting changes

Total Treatment Time: 8-16 weeks for complete protocol

Equipment

  • Multi-channel EEG neurofeedback system
  • High-quality EEG electrodes and conductive gel
  • Audio feedback system with headphones
  • Comfortable reclining chair
  • Quiet, dimly lit treatment room
  • Real-time signal processing software
