Your gut and brain are connected via:
- The vagus nerve (direct neural connection)
- Neurotransmitters produced in the gut (95% of serotonin is made there)
- Immune system signaling
- Metabolites produced by gut bacteria

Some studies show probiotics can improve mood, but results are inconsistent:

The Bottom Line
The gut-brain connection is real and important, but we're in early days. Eating a diverse, fiber-rich diet is the best-supported intervention. Probiotics may help modestly for some people. But if you have a mental health condition, don't skip proven treatments in favor of gut-focused approaches.
