Selective Mutism

To define Selective Mutism: Consistent failure to speak in specific situations (like school) despite speaking normally elsewhere, due to anxiety.

Overview

Description

Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder characterized by a consistent failure to speak in specific social situations (e.g., school) where there is an expectation to speak, despite speaking in other situations (e.g., home). The failure to speak is not due to lack of knowledge or comfort with the spoken language and significantly interferes with educational or social communication.

Prevalence

Estimated prevalence ~0.03–1% in children; more common in females; often co-occurs with social anxiety disorder.

Age of Onset

Typically begins before age 5; often recognized when school starts.
