Description
Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and recurrent episodes of irresistible sleep. It is often accompanied by cataplexy (sudden loss of muscle tone triggered by emotions), sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations. The condition is caused by dysregulation of the sleep-wake cycle, often due to loss of hypocretin (orexin) signaling in the brain.
