Language Disorder

To define Language Disorder: Persistent difficulty acquiring and using language affecting comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, or communication across spoken, written, or sign modalities.

Overview

Description

Language Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent difficulties in the acquisition and use of language across modalities (spoken, written, sign) due to deficits in comprehension and/or production. Areas affected often include vocabulary, sentence structure/grammar, and discourse. Difficulties are substantially below age expectations, begin in the early developmental period, and result in functional impairment. Deficits are not attributable to hearing loss, motor speech disorder, intellectual disability, neurological or medical conditions, or lack of exposure.

Prevalence

Estimated ~7–8% of young children; more common in males. Rates vary with assessment tools and language exposure.

Age of Onset

Symptoms emerge in early childhood as language should be developing (typically noticed by preschool/early school years).

DSM-5 Code

315.39

ICD-10 Code
