Description

Kleptomania is an impulse-control disorder characterized by recurrent failure to resist impulses to steal items that are not needed for personal use or monetary value. The theft is not committed to express anger or vengeance, is not in response to a delusion or hallucination, and is not better explained by conduct disorder, a manic episode, or antisocial personality disorder.

Prevalence

Rare; estimated <1% in the general population. More commonly identified in females and in clinical/forensic settings.

Age of Onset

Typically adolescence to early adulthood; may have a chronic, episodic course.
