Overview

Description

Gambling disorder is a persistent and recurrent problematic gambling behavior leading to clinically significant impairment or distress. Although not involving a psychoactive substance, it shares features with substance use disorders, including tolerance, withdrawal, and compulsive engagement despite negative consequences.

Prevalence

Lifetime prevalence ~0.4–1% in the U.S., with higher rates among men and younger adults.

Age of Onset

Typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood, though women may develop later with a more rapid progression.
