Bipolar II Disorder

To define Bipolar II Disorder: A mood condition with periods of elevated energy and mood alternating with episodes of deep depression, without full-blown mania.

Overview

Description

Bipolar II Disorder is characterized by at least one hypomanic episode and at least one major depressive episode, with no history of a full manic episode. Hypomania features elevated/expansive or irritable mood and increased energy lasting at least 4 consecutive days, observable by others, with clear change from baseline but without marked impairment, hospitalization, or psychosis.

Prevalence

Lifetime ~1–2%; often underrecognized due to subtle or ego-syntonic hypomania and prominent depression.

Age of Onset

Late adolescence to early adulthood; depressive episodes frequently precede recognition of hypomania.
