Overview

Description

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterized by restriction of energy intake leading to significantly low body weight, intense fear of gaining weight or persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain, and disturbance in the way one's body weight or shape is experienced, with undue influence of body shape/weight on self-evaluation or persistent lack of recognition of the seriousness of low body weight.

Prevalence

Point prevalence ~0.3–1% in females and lower in males; onset commonly in early to mid-adolescence, but can occur across the lifespan.

Age of Onset

Typically 12–18 years; risk peaks around puberty/adolescence.

Signs & Symptoms

Extreme weight loss, obsessive calorie counting, excessive exercise, distorted body image, and medical complications.

Causes & Risk Factors

Genetic vulnerability, perfectionism, anxiety traits, diet culture, weight-focused activities, and life stress.

How It's Diagnosed

Clinical interview, medical exam, lab work, assessment of eating behaviors, weight history, and psychological symptoms.

Treatment Options

Family-Based Treatment (FBT), CBT-E, nutritional rehabilitation, medical monitoring, and sometimes medications.

Medical Complications

Cardiac issues, bone loss, hormone disruption, electrolyte imbalances, and increased mortality risk.

Recovery & Prognosis

Full recovery is possible with early treatment. Family involvement and rapid weight restoration improve outcomes.

Living with Anorexia

Structured meals, reducing body checking, managing anxiety, family support, and maintaining treatment engagement.
